So, who besides me remembers the bring home the bacon articles from the 70’s in the women’s magazines? I was a kid but yeah, I read them all. There were always ‘busy day recipes’. If you look in the penultimate kitchen book, The BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS NEW COOK BOOK you will find busy day cake. So what’s a girl (or a lad) to do on a day where it’s been a blur of porn writing and smut crafting?
Busy Porn Day Cumin Chicken.
This is a favorite in my house and yes, I concocted it on the spot one night when I realized I had zero for dinner. I had just wrapped up a story and had but an hour or so till dinner time. And absolutely no idea what to make. Now, let’s be smart about this, since I do not measure and tend to say palmful (a la Rachel Ray), if you have a palm the size of Texas you might want to tone it down a bit. If your palm is minuscule you might want to add a bit. The point is good taste and to wing it.
A palmful of ground cumin
A (scant) palmful of kosher salt (not table salt!!!)
A pinch of pepper
A pinch of paprika (optional)
Olive oil to make a paste
Chicken (duh ;)
Add all the spices and olive oil. Massage the chicken. Here is where I sing! Feel free to pull from my play list or add your own: SexyBack (Haven just hit the deck, did you hear that?), Can’t Get Next To You, Bernadette, With or Without You, Strength of a Woman (oh, he just got up and now he’s back down!), anything from Sam’s Town and especially anything by Otis Redding. You get the picture. Feel free to tweak your own list.
Massage the hell out of your chicken and then put it in the Rotisserie. Now! If you do not have a rotisserie this works on oven chicken or chicken on the grill. The only kind of chicken it does not work on it already cooked chicken because that would just be stupid.
I put my chicken in the machine for 1.5 hours and then I make oven fries. Remember, I have been busy crafting smut all day so I try to give a good dinner in a little time. I wash up my potatoes and cut them into slices that as closely as possible resemble actual French fries. Sometimes I am more successful than others. I toss in more olive oil and a tiny pinch of sea salt (not table or Kosher!!) and put in a 400 degree oven for 30 minutes. Then I flip and bake for another 30 to 45 mins.
I mix horseradish in with the man’s ketchup and leave the kiddos’ plain.
Nothing says nice dinner like charred summer corn. We have a farm stand up the road and I tried to stay stocked in sweet white corn. If I have corn on the busy porn days, I strip it to about naked (the corn, not me. But if this is a dinner for two...well...nevermind! nevermind!). Wet the husk good and char it over a grill, a griddle, or even the stove burner. Now that one is tricky, because you really have to stay with corn while you are charring it. And I don’t really do that. I tend to wander. No lie. So I often hear: "Are we charring this corn or burning the shit out of it, because it’s on fire."
Damn! I call it Flaming Corn. A little herb butter, Irish butter or just plain old butter and salt (yes, table) accent the corn nicely.
Now we move to a nice box of wine. Yes, box. Good, voluminous, red and cheap. Just like me! We are fans of Carlo Rossi Merlot right now. And it really is a pleasant little wine. If the box offends you, I encourage you to remove the bladder, recycle the box, and walk around squirting wine into each other mouths and calling one another gaucho which is Spanish for cowboy! It all goes with the cumin, I think.

If you absolutely abhor the box wine, we did stumble across this nice wine recently and it’s really good and the bottle is really pretty (and for some reason that truly matters to me!). So you can always have Bohemian Highway Cabernet.
I think I’m breaking the chicken rule with red wine as opposed to white, but you know my motto: fuck it!
Dessert. Right. Dessert. Hmm. I never got around to that. It was a busy porn day. So that is why the Universe, in its infinite wisdom, put a small ice cream place right around the corner. I’ll have a vanilla soft-serve nude please!
Ole!
Now, you. What do you prepare for the masses on busy porn days? Or busy any days? No longer do we need Hamburger Helper or mac and cheese in a box. We are more evolved than that. What’s your most cherished slap-dash meal? Do tell.
And since I somehow managed to schedule myself for Father’s Day without realizing it, I will be in and out much like my beloved porn stories. So Happy Father’s Day and happy chatting! I hope you enjoyed my busy day meal. Fire and all.
XOXO
Sommer

Hi Sommer! Thanks for doing this on Father's Day! I hope that your man enjoys his day, and that you enjoy the man!
You are the coolest mom! My mom never served Busy Porn Day anything, just plain old conservative, uptight meatloaf and stuff like that! I'm absolutely positive there was no cumin in our household. ;)
It's late - I'll stop back again in the daylight. But, thanks again!
Happy Father's Day to all of the dads and dad figures and male role models!
Hey Sommer! It seems appropriate to post the Busy Porn Day recipe on your own busy day today. ;)
And what an array of salt this kitchen session seems to call for! (Giving Haven a head — um, start. Heh heh heh...)
Well, I don’t really have any “masses” in my place of dwelling generally (the cat is pretty easy in that he eats the same food every day), and, um, now that I think about it I wouldn’t say the content or level of formality of my typical “meals” really seems to change much depending on the busy-ness of the day ("meals" being in quotation marks because it has sometimes consisted of my standing in front of the refrigerator and stuffing something in my mouth for a while. Then looking for something to eat...)
Okay, where was I? Oh yes. So really I have tended to not cook or consume formal “meals” much of the time. I just eat. Heh. Something I love when I feel hungry and want to eat immediately (which seems frequent) is a thrown-together mix of romaine lettuce, crumbled gorganzola, dried cranberries, and flax seeds with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It’s more of a side dish but it tides me over while I look for what else I want to eat. :)
Happy Father’s Day to the Man and all fathers reading! And happy day to all as well. :)
Thanks Sommer!
Good Morning, Sommer!
Love the recipes :)
If I have an hour to make dinner, I'm golden. In that time span I can defrost and whip up just about any of our favorites. No box meals here(seriously, there are NONE in this house).
But, a quick fast meal -
Baked chicken(or rabbit meat, if you like it) fingers -
--homemade shake and bake mix(if you want the actual recipe, lemme know, but it has some cumin in it!)
--chicken(breast or thigh works)
--veggie oil(your preference)
Cut chicken into strips, pour a tablespoon or so of oil into a bowl and coat the meat. Dredge in the shake and bake mix to liberally coat.
Bake at 425 for about 20 minutes - tada, done! I actually do this in my toaster oven.
Serve with honey mustard sauce(also easy to make from things readily available in the fridge...mayo, honey, mustard - I need to try to find the actual recipe for that though).
Generally chicken fingers are accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes or baked potatoes and a side of corn.
My other favorite hour or less meal will actually take center stage on July 5th!
By the way, I, Scarlett, am taking JM Stone's place in the tour *wink*
Hope everyone has a lovely day!!
Love your recipe, Sommer! I don't really cook. I don't even play a cook on TV. But I am the strange sort of person who reads cookbooks for fun. I do! I imagine that someday I might cook the fabulous meals within. (I also read books about cooks: Tender at the Bone, Kitchen Confidential. Yeah, I'm odd.)
Still, your recipe is so tempting, I may actually go put on an apron (and nothing else), and have at it. What's the worst thing that could happen? I'd drop my wine in a box?
XXX,
Alison
P.S. Thanks for bringing sexy back.
That sounds fantastic Sommer! And I laughed at the flamming corn... that would totally be me.
Incidentally, if you throw your spices (not in handfulls though) into a food processor with a large can of drained chickpeas, a couple eggs and some breadcrumbs, you end up with falafel. I make patties instead of balls, and just pan fry (you can use oil spray). Top with a mayo that's been mixed with lemon juice and garlic, or hummus, taboule, or tahini, and serve in a pita. Comes togther in minutes. :)
Oh, yeah! Throw an onion and some garlic into that food processor, too. Sorry.
Ah, Sommer, how perfect that you are comin' with cumin, the sexiest spice on the cook's palette. Cumin smells like sweaty men to me and I love my men sweaty ;-).
Like Alison, I also love reading cookbooks and dreaming of making the luscious recipes, although I seldom do. It's kind of like porn, although I tend to realize those fantasies more often in my real life. But many thanks for this "busy porn day" recipe idea. You've already changed laundry folding for me forever (still waiting on the realization of that one, but it's coming ;-) and now my busy porn day dinners will always have their proper name!
All the better if the busy porn day dinner is as hands-on sexy as your feast today. Scooping up the spice with greedy abandon, mixing it with unctuous olive oil, massaging and rubbing the flesh of the chicken over and over until satisfied [sound of drool being swallowed]. I think I need a few rhythmic squirts of that red wine directly in my mouth, although a few drops on my lips, cheek and chin are fine--and yes, fuck it, red wine goes with everything. Even the ice cream.
Speaking of squirts and spurts, I tend to cook in spurts. A big pot of soup or pasta sauce and then we have leftovers on busy porn days. But a favorite "easy" menu for summer for me is what I call a farm supper. Fresh corn, steamed green beans, sliced tomatoes, bread and cheese. Add some local wine from Trader Joe's and everyone is happy, or at least I'm too happy to care if they're not.
And yes, I add my wishes for a Happy Father's Day to your man and all the dads here or related to the spicy guests in attendance.
Spam word: hy-pop
Did anyone else get a "Father's Day" theme?
Hi Sommer!
I think it's appropriate for your spicy day to also fall on your man's day. Makes perfect sense to me. ;-)
You know I already think you're amazing and if I was your child (physically impossible in this lifetime) I would just sit up on a bar stool with my mouth hanging open all the time. Palmfulls, smidgens and scants, oh, my! I love it!
I make empanadas all the time and then toss a green salad. I serve those hot meat-less pies with beer, or whatever I already have open in the fridge or sitting on the kitchen counter. BTW: my very good friend has been purchasing some rather nice wine in a box from Target. I've had a glass or two, or three...maybe and it's not bad. It's very economical too.
Great post. I do love cumming, I meant, cumin. I have oodles (is that a Sommer word?) in my kitchen.
p.s. All the massaging of the chicken might make a meat eater out of me again! LOL!
spam word: mings: men with wings! Happy Father's Day!
oh look at all the impromptu recipes on my blog! i might have to make a dinner for guests that include Emerald's salad, Scarlett's chicken, C's falafel (I will not burn it whilst getting done in the kitchen...okay, so i might. because AT is a bad influence on me!). Maybe DGS will give me her soup recipe and then I will go to Neve's the next night to let her cook empenadas for me. I have always wanted to make them. Yum.
Okay, I was in and now I am out. Peeling shrimp and all that good stuff. Doing a little at a time so I don't set fire to anything or anyone! Counting down for wine time. But for now, coffee, had to dump it out because it had ants in it! damn ants. They are insane!
My word is felen. I swear the man is not one. But our daughter's getting older and he said he's gonna tell her dates: "I'm not afraid to go to jail"

L’Autre is piles of spices simmering in the hot African sun. It is desert dust, the dirt on the street and a hint of body odor from the salesman’s robes. If the spice is somewhat obvious, it is a picture worth 10,000 words. To wear it or not might require a considered decision, but there is a reason you see it as dirty; perfumers know well that one of the molecules in cumin is also found in sweat."
Love me some Chandler Burr, I do.
XXX,
Alison
Well, tis a good Father's Day because the mister got home from travels yesterday and so I didn't have to sleep alone last night! Yay! I'm making jambalaya for him (tis spicy) tonight, and though not horribly difficult, it's not a busy porn day recipe. One that is though is what I call my "Quick Chili" - because I made it once and had to serve it a lot quicker than the original recipe said, but it was good anyhow. A pound of ground beef and a small-medium onion, diced, browned in a pan. A large can of diced tomatoes. About 2 TBLS or more (to taste) of hot chili powder (there's a reason why I chose that spice for my tour date), salt and pepper and here's the secret ingredients - a TBLS of brown sugar, a generous dash of both ground allspice and ground cloves. Simmer all that for about 15-20 minutes, then add a drained can of red kidney beans and heat for another 15 minutes till the beans are heated through. Serve with grated cheddar cheese and tortillas or chips. If there are any leftovers, they do taste better the next day, but lately we don't tend to have leftovers.
Oh, my, it looks like the sun is trying to come out!
Have a great day folks!
oh my god. i read that and thought why was Chandler Bing talking about spices? haha! Burr! Chandler BURR ya dizzy blonde! (me, not you!)
Robin, that sounds awesome. I am so doing that this week. Yum!
Have a great spicy father's day with your man! :)

Fish in a bag with rice. That's my busy porn day meal. I am agog at your busy porn day meal. You're a kitchen marvel!
Hi again! So many yummy recipes to try! I also love to read cookbooks - have a big collection of them, love reading them, don't cook from them nearly enough!
If it's just me and the kids on a busy day, and if I don't spring for fast junk food (which I seldom do!), we'll sometimes do "Breakfast for Dinner." It's eggs, pancakes, french toast, sausage, some fruit - whatever's in the fridge that I can whip up quickly. We serve breakfast any time at our place.
Thanks, Sommer!
I totally didn't see this cummin' ... but, by sheer coincidence, we had cumin cheese this morning—first time ever. I'd forgotten it was going to be Cumin Day! So, like, wow.
Love your motto, btw. : )
And Happy Father's Day to all!
charlotte, we cannot do fish often as girl child is allergic. but we have done fish tacos when she is off on a sleepover. easy stuff, fish. unless you wander off and turn it into shoe leather. which i would never, ever, EVER do! not me *whistles innocently*
marina, breakfast for dinner is a big hit. especially if we go off our rockers and throw in sugary, syrupy pancakes, too. my god. you should see the inmates! I mean the kids.
Jeremy, cumin cheese. Yum. have never heard of if. love unusual foods, keep 'em...uh...cummin! ;)
xoxo
s
Ah, so it's scientifically proven by the perfume makers that cumin and sweat are related. I suspected as much!
Yes, so many great "easy" recipes here. Why am I not surprised ;-)? Actually I've been hankering after falafel all morning since I read C. Taylor's post. And cumin cheese? Intriguing.
My soup recipe is very free form. Just throw in whatever veggies you have on hand, although I make sure an onion is the first thing in the pot. Four cups of canned broth, one can of chopped tomatoes. A spice of choice--cumin if you're going Mexican with onion, zucchini and corn.
Speaking of spam words, as the mother of two boys you reminded me that his date's dad is going to be a force to be reckoned with somewhere along the way, felon or no. Kinda scary, lol.
breakfast for dinner - yay! We have also been known to (in summer) have banana splits for dinner - you know - with all the toppings - you can get a lot of food groups in ;-)
Just *cuming* back after a little jog around the lake and some much needed bush trimming (yard work, people, yard work!) LOL!
Cumin cheese? Really? I think I need to learn more about that Jeremy.
Sommer, you're peeling shrimp? What's your address again? haha.
Everyone is cooking up a storm, quite literally, the clouds are moving in again. My stomach is growling like crazy over all these recipes. Yummy!
I also have lots of cookbooks and I enjoy trying to create a recipe that's beyond my ability. I usually f it up, but in my attempt to re-create, I usually end up with a hybrid of the original and it turns out to be a crowd pleaser. What do you know?
Everyone is welcome to my house at anytime for empanadas. I make them all the time now. I'm part Spanish, remember? haha.
hey sommer..i love cooking..i m grown up with creole and brazilian food (which is pretty much the same)and always loved to have guests and liked to stand in the kitchen for hours and hours and prepare 4 course(???) dinners for my family and friends...but lately..i dont know why..is it because the busy porn days..i start to think about relaxed cooking..out of a sudden i buy books like..easy cooking..or the lazy cook...plus: i love chicken..in every and each form or shape...prepare a proper chicken ( and this..your recipe i mean sound svery proper) and i ll be there on time at your door..bring the chicken and i ll bringe the dessert..:-)

@ neve
hm..empanadas sound great too...
Flaming Falafel! Lol. Um, cumin cheese sounds potentially magnificent. I want some. I love cheese (arguably a little too much).
I have read cookbooks before and found them interesting as well, but I will say I for the most part abandoned recipes years ago after getting partway trough them and realizing I didn't have some ingredient so many times. Yes, I know it's advised to go through and account for all the ingredients before starting, but I forgot, okay? Lol. So for the most part I just make up my own recipes now.
Well I'm suddenly ravenous and must go throw together a salad while I figure out what else I want to eat. ;)
@ alison and emerald
i also have tons of cook books..love to read them..and actually mean read...but somehow i rarely manage it to cook with recipes...i always was the kind of cook without measures..i just cook with heart..not with cups or spoons..and whenever i plan to cook after recipe it ends the way that i think..hm...this and this and this..okay forget about this and that but add this and this..and in the end its something totally different..tasty..but not what i planned..:-)
Robin, care for a danish and a scoop?
Am jealous of the jog, neve. i am waiting for my body to reboot so i can return to running!
DGS~ freeform works for me. To me, freeform soup is always the best. Or as I call it...what's in the fridge I can use soup!
Danielle, creole and Brazilian! I am coming to your house, yum!
I love cookbooks but mainly for the pictures. Shh...Stop laughing. But I am a world renowned substituter, Emerald. When I do not have a needed ingredient I wing it (hence the motto:fuck it!)
I do, though, love my Gooseberry Patch cookbooks to death and have a whole bookshelf full. Because do I not just look like a little country girl? But I am. Porn and rustic country crafting. I am an enigma.
http://www.gooseberrypatch.com
sommer..if that would be so easy...since a while i feel like there are so many great writers here (not here but there..in the states i mean) that i d like to get to know and be friends with..but even for you guys who live on the same continend it isnt easy since all of you live far away from each other..right?
danielle, sadly, most of my closest friends are rather far away! but thank goodness for email and internet, yeah?! :)

Oh man. I thought I was the only person in the whole wide world to notice that cumin smelled like sexy sweat and now I find out that, not only is it cumin knowledge, it's fucking scientific.
This sounds absolutely delish Sommer! and so easy, my kinda recipe. Another busy porn day FAST recipe with cumin is:
A cup of couscous
A cup++ of broth
1/4 cup of peas
1 tsp cumin
Stir couscous, cumin, and peas into boiling broth, remove from heat, cover, fluff with fork after 5 minutes and ecco. Goes really well with ginger chicken, recipe to follow, July 26th...
You're making me horny, oops I mean hungry...
Hi Sommer, sorry I'm late. Father's day stuff and all that.
The recipe looks perfect!
I am definitely called up on to cook on busy smut days (after all, what day is not a busy smut day?) Leftovers are often a perfect way to go. For leftover medium rare roast beef, I simply dice the meat up, and re-cook it in a bit of peanut oil with some soy sauce and sriracha sauce, and perhaps a bit of sesame oil. Then, take some left over baked potatoes, dice 'em up and cook them in the sauce from the meat. Add some steamed green beans, and Bob's your uncle. (Is there an uncle's day?) Simple, quick, and tasty! Matter of fact, I always buy too much roast meat and bake too many potatoes just to indulge in this little leftover treat.
And, of course, being a guy, anything that can be cooked quickly over a fire or charcoals is a good way to go. Mmmm. Burgers, or maybe Bratwursts!
Then another verification word came up: roust
I'm a bit of a roust-about.
@ sommer
well..that gives me hope that i still have the chance get to know a few of you guys better..:-)

Timberlake + wine in a box = dick in a box. Yes?
Then looking for something to eat...**
LOL, Emerald!
cumin knowledge**
LOLikewise, Isabel!
The cumin cheese was purchased by accident by someone who likes cheese with caraway seeds. But we all agreed it was a happy accident. It was a cheese from Leiden, Netherlands.
Oh, Isabel! I have to try that, yum. That sounds perfect for a really light dinner. That and a little wine.
Craig, I am furiously taking notes because that is right down our alley. I might have to start a list of all these fast and easy recipes.
Porn Writer's Quickie Recipes For Busy Porn Days. I'm trying to envision a cover as we speak. :)
Danielle, you are always welcome to hang out and get to know us. And obviously, tell us all of your culinary secrets too ;)

And then there's always gourmet ramen noodles...
Yum!
A recipe book of quickies for busy porn days is an awesome idea, Sommer! But why limit the illustrations to the cover? A mouth-watering pic for every recipe would be very much in the cookbook tradition, right ;-)?
This is turning out to be quite a collection of original dishes. Thanks so much for sparking such a luscious porn day buffet.
fried rice! - leftover rice (or cooked up special), an egg or two cooked (scrambled or pierced yolk cooked all the way), chopped onions, chopped celery, whatever leftover meat or veggies you have, all fried up in some light oil (peanut is best) and then some soy sauce and hoisen sauce.
right now I am stuffed - waiting to eat dessert - chocolate mousse!
I think the idea of a busy porn day cookbook is awesome.
oh, love the doctored Ramens, Craig. And the man makes some killer fried rice, Robin.
I agree, DGS, I am loving the quickie menu.
Dick in a box, J? Better than Jack. That thing always scared the shit out of me.
xoxo
s
I'm pretty sure this won't scare you.
Oh my! I was out scrambling around all day -- how nice to come back to all of this excitement and food porn! I want to go massage the hell out of my chicken right now!
Cumin and sweat -- that's so cool. I wonder what other spices have similarly sexy relations.
My favorite quickie dinner is transformed leftovers like leftover turkey cooked up into a big pot pie with Martha Stewart's butter crust or pork roast spiced & slathered into burrito filling.
Thanks Sommer!!
oh haha! Jeremy. :)
GM~ put 'butter crust' on a shoe and I am there! Love crust. Is why I live for pot pie.

G'night, y'all! Thanks for making time to pop in today. You rock! :)
XOXO
Sommer
I missed the afternoon yesterday(*whistles innocently*) but look at all the good ideas!
@Emerald - I substitute into recipes all the time! In fact my favorite recipe(that I will share 7/5) is the result of not having read the entire recipe. It's now one of our favorite dishes!
Thanks for hosting such a lovely cooking party, Sommer! It was delicious!
@ summer

Hey, good-lookin', whatcha got cookin'?
Wha...What hit me? I coulda sworn I saw Justin Shaggylake or some other former Mousekateer...
My apologies for being absent yesterday. My precious innerwebs time was non-existent between various Father's Day activities. Some torturous, some...more torturous. ;)
Anyhow, I'm sorry. Just wanted to pop in and say Sommer rocks the house. From my detatched observer point of view, (I mean from on the other end of this here internet...I'm not actually in the church parking lot up the street from your house with my binoculars. In that white van. Yeah, that one. That's not me.) Sommer Marsden is one hell of a momma. Nice recipe. And thanks for a great blog on Father's Day. Happy Father's Day to everyone, and Happy Father's Day to all you hot mommas who make it all worth it!
Yum, yum, yum, DDS! Love that spicy chicken. Much thanks! :)
Hey, haven, hope you had a great day.
Scarlett, I will fix your link. It will not take. But i'll keep trying. You are in the sidebar though. Crossing fingers for points.
